Essential Oils Helpful for Labour

Essential oils can be really soothing and helpful in pregnancy. They can also be really effective as a natural remedy to help manage pain during labour and delivery. Here’s a selection of our favorite essential oils and how they can be used in labour. Penny recommends finding your personal favorites and if they are helpful you can pop them into your Mary Poppins bag to take with you to hospital.

Lavender Oil – promotes relaxation and eases muscular tension. Great as a massage oil in active labour.

Frankincense Oil – calms your emotions by inhaling the aroma. Rubbing on lower back and abdomen can ease labour discomfort.

Peppermint Oil – can ease nausea during labour by inhaling the aroma. Great for labour massage.

Jasmine Oil – evokes feeling of joy, happiness, peace and self- confidence. Can be used as a massage oil.

Rose Oil – can be used to help relax in labour. A few drops in a bath or massage into the lower back can help soften ligaments.

Clary Sage Oil – a few drops on your inner ankles can help to induce more effective contractions and help with the process of labour. Great for a labour pain soother.

Myrrh Oil – inhaling the aroma can encourage normal labour.

Mandarin or Lime Oil – a drop on a tissue as a refreshing scent.

Sweet Orange Oil – Used for mood lifting, energy boost and a refreshing scent.
